ABS – Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene
ABS – Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene
Application: ABS plastic is used for home appliances, toys, cabinets for bl. a.
refrigerators and freezers, suitcases, mobile phones, fittings for water supply, pipes and fittings, apparatus houses and screens, etc.. Plastic with chrome plating.
Co-extruded sheet of ABS with a top layer of acrylic ( PMMA ) Eller PMMA / ABS / PMMA, called sanitary acrylic, and used for thermoforming of bathtubs and the like.
Fire: Burner bad but is usually not self-extinguishing. Fire can be developed various substances such as styrene, acrylonitrile and other organics. Some types are provided flame-retardant according to the requirements, made self-extinguishing materials, for use in e.g.. airplanes.
Electrical properties: Charger little static electricity in normal humidity. Surfaces dust therefore not as easy to.
Colors: ABS is a white plastic, that can be dyed in all colors and gold-plating.
Physiological properties: Some types can be approved for prolonged contact with foodstuffs in the BGA (Germany) and FDA (USA). When used in machines available guidelines from the German and US authorities for the permissible levels of various substances, which types can be selected.
History: The first use of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymer is present in 1948 in the manufacture of suitcases. Lego starts production of Lego bricks of ABS in 1963. I 1966 ABS is used for the first time as exterior surfaces of helicopters.
Identification fire test: Burns with a sooting and orange yellow flame. Smells like sweet rubber. Is not self-extinguishing. But can be added flame retardants.
Trade names: Metzo® plastics PS, Cycolac®, Royalite®, Senosan®
Category: Amorphous thermoplastics with very varying composition of the three components.
Chemical resistance: Relatively good chemical resistance depending on the acrylonitrile content. Attacked by many organic solvents, but are resistant to bases, water, salts and some organic solvents.
Chemical structure: Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene polymer is based on three monomer: acrylonitrile 15-35 % (A), butadiene 5 -30 % (B) and styrene 40-60 % (S). Density: that. 1,05 g/cm3.
Delivery: Tube, fittings, plate, rods, welding wire, filament for 3D Printers.
Bonding: ABS can be glued using solvents, eg. gamma butyrolacton (GBL), methyl chloride methyl ethyl eller (MEK). The adhesion is effected by a weak solution of the adhesive surfaces, after a certain amount of steaming time-, compressed for about. 10 minutes. Fugen should not be charged in 2 day. It may be advantageous to make a more viscous glue mass recovering little plastic material in opløsningen.Ved gluing ABS other materials may be applied contact adhesive or a two-component.
Mechanical properties: Characterized by good mechanical properties. Good stiffness and dimensional stability. ABS has a very large impact strength, including notched impact strength (high resistance to stress cracking). The most impact resistant types will be the least rigid.
Optical properties: ABS. is usually not ready, due elastomer content, there are clear types of packaging.
Surface treatment: ABS plastic can be molded with an attractive surface finish. Can be applied colors among others. with roller and paint spray or pressure, including silkscreen. Test subjects, before production start, from attack by solvents. ABS plastic kan metalliseres.
Assembly (mechanical): can be joined with screws, bolts, rivets, staples, sewing or by clicking collections. May have a different coefficient of thermal expansion than the material, that it is attached to.
Injection molding: Processing temperature by injection molding and extrusion ca. 220 to 240ºC.
Cutting: ABS is not brittle and does not splinter when machining. Andvend sharp tool. be stopped, cut and cajoled.
Welding: Varmespejl 200-220 ° C with strength about. 80%. Can also be welded together with Acrylic, PC og SAN. – Varmluftsvejsning 220-240 ° C, very well in some mixtures up to about. 70 % strength. –
Ultrasonic welding. – Viberationssvejsning – Friction welding
Thermal Properties: Depending on the type of, is used in the temperature range from -40 ° C to +80 to 95 ° C.
UV- Stability: gulner the presence of sunlight. Resistance to UV light may be improved by addition of carbon black (sort) or by using UV stabilizers and ASA terpolymer. The mechanical properties is reduced by the action of UV light.
Thermoforming (Termoformning): ABS plates is one of the most used materials for thermoforming and similar hot form methods, as the material can be shaped in the deep features and complex shapes, and that it has a short warm-up time.
Density: 1,05 – 1,10
